Other Disabilities

Deaf and hard-of-hearing students may have other, or additional disabilities. These students need specialized support. In an educational setting, students with additional needs may need specialized assessments to help identify specific areas of need and could qualify for additional special education services. Assessment and IEP decisions will guide families and the school IEP team in designing the best educational plan.

When reading or researching for resources and support, consider using a variety of terms:

  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students with additional needs
  • Deaf Plus
  • High-Risk Deaf
  • Deaf child with (insert name of other disability)

These additional resources can help families and professionals determine the best educational approach.

  • Legal Framework for multiple disabilities: Knowing the foundation for multiple disabilities qualifications for placement in an educational program can assist in setting up an effective and beneficial approach for the student.
